| Resumo | This study deals with the interrelations between tropical large scale sea surface temperature anomalies, planetary scale anomalous wavy-like flows and droughts over Northeast Brazil. In order to understand the atmospheric response to tropical heat sources, observational and theoretical studies are reviewed (Horel and Wallace, 1981; Simmons, 1982; Hoskins and Karoly, 1981; Webster and Holton, 1982; Moura and Shukla, 1981). Upper air data (1963-80)of monthly wind and geopotential fields at 700 and 200 mb were analysed over the tropics and Northern Hemisphere. The main results which appear clearly in the vorticity deviations, during the Northern Hemisphere winters, are: 1)There exist a persistent wave-train pattern between the North Atlantic and the Siberian region during years of deficient or abundant precipitation over Northeast Brazil. The wave pattern changes phase by a factor of approximately, when years of droughts are contrasted with very wet years. 2)The location of the centers of actions and the phase changes seem to confirm the findings of Namias (1972)which relates abnormal precipitation episodes over NE Brazil with anomalous cyclonic activity in the Greenland-Newfound region. 3)There exist wave patterns between the Central Pacific and North America, as described by Horel and Wallace (1981)and Wallace and Gutzler (1981)during years of El Nino occurrence. The conclusion is that even though it is not an easy matter to establish the causes of droughts over Northeast Brazil, this work adds further observational and theoretical evidences that extreme (droughts and floods)precipitation regimes are associated with large scale forcings in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. |
